Saraland completed the 2017 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region one, the Spartans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Saraland reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Hillcrest Tuscaloosa by a score of 34-27. The Spartans had some tough luck last season as three of their four losses were by less than eight points. Since 2010, Saraland has gone a combined 63-32. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Their last losing season was 2010. The Spartans are led by head coach Jeff Kelly who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 60-25 over the past seven seasons at Saraland. Under his direction the Spartans have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Kelly. Coach Kelly's overall record as a head football coach in fourteen season stands at 107-59 (64.5%). His 107 wins rank 54th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Kelly's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times and won one region championship. The Saraland Spartans will play in Class 6A region one during the 2018 season. The Spartans should be in contention for a playoff spot in region one this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2010 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2018. The Spartans open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Andalusia on Friday, August 24 at Spartans Stadium. Last year the Andalusia Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 12-2 and in first place in Class 4A region one.
