2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
UMS-Wright completed the 2017 season with a 13-2 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region one, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. The Bulldogs reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 4A State Championship by defeating Fayette County at the Alabama Super Seven 21-7 in Auburn. The defense was very stingy last season as UMS-Wright ranked 27th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.9 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 22-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, UMS-Wright has gone a combined 85-23. Their 79.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 4A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, UMS-Wright has gone a combined 252-74. Their 77.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 4A and 8th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2007. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Terry Curtis who is entering his twentieth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 212-49 over the past nineteen seasons at UMS-Wright. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of nineteen times. They have won thirteen region crowns with Coach Curtis. Coach Curtis has won six state championships at UMS-Wright, the last coming in 2017. Coach Curtis' overall record as a head football coach in twenty-nine season stands at 289-85 (77.3%). His 289 wins rank 3rd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Curtis' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-six times and won sixteen region championships. He has a 65-20 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. The UMS-Wright Bulldogs will play in Class 4A region one during the 2018 season. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 78-36 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 4A and 6th in the AHSAA. UMS-Wright will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. Region one will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. The Bulldogs enter the 2018 season having won 9 straight region games. The Bulldogs should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Bulldogs are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Bulldogs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 1993 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Bulldogs open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent St. Pauls on Friday, August 24 at E.E. Delaney Field. Last year the St. Pauls Saints finished with an overall record of 14-1 and in second place in Class 5A region one. The Saints won the Class 5A State Championship last season when they defeated Briarwood by a score of 17-14 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. UMS-Wright and St. Pauls have met a total of 46 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 23-23-0 record against the Saints. They last met in 2017 with St. Pauls winning by a score of 9-0. UMS-Wright returns 4A All-State offensive lineman Hunter Middleton. He was named to the first team last season. The Bulldogs also return running back Symon Smith. He was named to the first team. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
