2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gulf Shores finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Gulf Shores finished seventh in Class 6A region one with a 2-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Gulf Shores struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.5 points a game. The Dolphins would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Gulf Shores has gone a combined 29-52. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 6A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 18 seasons, Gulf Shores has managed to compile a record of 65-116. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 6A and 308th in the AHSAA. The Dolphins are led by head coach Matt Blake who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Gulf Shores. The Dolphins saw improvement from a 0-10 record the season before coach Blake arrived. The Dolphins have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Blake. Coach Blake's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 5-15 (25.0%). The Gulf Shores Dolphins will play in Class 6A region one during the 2018 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Dolphins if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. The Dolphins open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Satsuma on Friday, August 24 at Copeland Field. Last year the Satsuma Gators finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 4A region one. The Gators ended last season on a positive note with a win over Chickasaw by a score of 44-7 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Gulf Shores and Satsuma have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Dolphins have a 4-2-0 record against the Gators. They last met in 2013 with Gulf Shores winning by a score of 34-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
