 2022 Preview 


       Buckhorn completed the 2021 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Buckhorn finished sixth in Class 6A region eight with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Bucks improved in 2021 with their first winning season since 2016. The Bucks last playoff victory came during the 2005 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Since 2010, Buckhorn has gone a combined 54-71. Their 43.2% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Buckhorn has managed to compile a record of 124-142. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 6A and 226th in the AHSAA.




       The Bucks are led by head coach Matt Patterson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-5 record in his first season at Buckhorn. The Bucks saw improvement from a 4-6 record the season before coach Patterson arrived. The Bucks have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Patterson.

       Coach Patterson's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 5-5 (50.0%).

       The Buckhorn Bucks will play in Class 6A region eight during the 2022 season.

       With a little luck and some improvement, the Bucks could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season. Buckhorn missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2022.

       The Bucks open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Madison County on Friday, August 19 at Tommy R. Ledbetter Stadium. Last year the Madison County Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 4A region seven. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Northside by a score of 35-31.

       Buckhorn and Madison County have met a total of 43 times on the football field. The Bucks have a 31-12-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2021 with Buckhorn winning by a score of 24-13.

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
