 2022 Preview 


       Opelika completed the 2021 season with a 9-4 record. Last year Opelika captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Opelika lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Hueytown team by a score of 46-10.

       Since 2010, Opelika has gone a combined 108-40. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 7A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Opelika has gone a combined 234-69. Their 77.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 7A and 11th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-five winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1995.




       The Bulldogs are led by head coach Erik Speakman who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 36-14 over the past four seasons at Opelika. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Speakman.

       Coach Speakman's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 36-14 (72.0%).

       The Opelika Bulldogs will play in Class 7A region two during the 2022 season. The Bulldogs move up in classification to Class 7A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 76-39 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 7A and 3rd in the AHSAA.

       Region two will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season.

       The Bulldogs enter the 2022 season having won 7 straight region games. The Bulldogs should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2009 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2022.

       The Bulldogs open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Callaway GA on Friday, August 19.

       Opelika and Callaway GA have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 3-2-0 record against Callaway GA. They last met in 2021 with Callaway GA winning by a score of 30-21.
