2022 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Woodville finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Woodville finished seventh in Class 1A region seven with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Panthers lost as many games as in any season since 2013. The Panthers have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2022. The Panthers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they did not win a game which followed a 5-6 record in 2020. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Woodville averaged scoring just 9.0 points a game. The Panthers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 51.4 points a game. Since 2010, the Woodville football program has struggled with a record of 32-92. Over the past 16 seasons, Woodville has not won much with a record of 34-130. Their 21.0% winning percentage ranks 58th in Class 1A and 384th in the AHSAA. The Panthers have struggled on the football field with no winning seasons during this time. The Panthers are led by head coach Matt Sanders who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at Woodville. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Sanders. The Woodville Panthers will play in Class 1A region seven during the 2022 season. The Panthers enter the 2022 season in the middle of a 11 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Panthers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Woodville will be to simply win some games. The Panthers open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Whitesburg Christian on Friday, August 19 at Whitesburg Christian Stadium. Last year the Whitesburg Christian Warriors finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 2A region seven. The Warriors ended last season on a positive note with a win over Coosa Christian by a score of 35-28 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Woodville and Whitesburg Christian have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 1-1-0 record against the Warriors.
