2022 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Marengo completed the 2021 season with a 5-5 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region two, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Marengo's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Notasulga by a score of 45-16. Since 2010, Marengo has gone a combined 65-65. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marengo has managed to compile a record of 131-135. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 1A and 199th in the AHSAA. The Panthers will be under the direction of new head football coach Katrell Watters as they enter the 2022 season. Coach Watters served on the staff at Marengo last season. The Marengo Panthers will play in Class 1A region three during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Panthers remain in 1A but move from region two over to region three. The Panthers will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region three this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2014 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2022. Marengo simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 56 students, the Panthers are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. The Panthers open the 2022 season on the road against non-region opponent Washington County on Friday, August 19 at Jordan Wilcox Stadium. Last year the Washington County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in fifth place in Class 2A region one. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a loss to Southern Choctaw by a score of 50-20. Marengo and Washington County have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 3-3-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 1999 with Marengo winning by a score of 20-7. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
