Athens completed the 2022 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Athens just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region seven with a 1-4 region record. Since 2010, Athens has gone a combined 66-75. Their 46.8% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Athens has managed to compile a record of 161-128. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 6A and 127th in the AHSAA. The Golden Eagles are led by head coach Cody Gross who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 40-35 over the past seven seasons at Athens. Under his direction the Golden Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Gross. Over the course of his career, Coach Gross' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won two region championships. The Golden Eagles have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 64-49 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 6A and 49th in the AHSAA. The Golden Eagles could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Athens missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2023. The Golden Eagles open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent East Limestone on Thursday, August 24 at Cavnar Stadium. Last year the East Limestone Indians finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 5A region eight. The Indians lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Arab by a score of 54-14. Athens and East Limestone have met a total of 16 times on the football field.
