2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
B.T. Washington completed the 2022 season with a 6-6 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 4A region two, the Golden Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. B.T. Washington reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Anniston by a score of 38-20. The Golden Eagles improved in 2022 with their first winning season since 2016. The Golden Eagles won as many games as in any season since 2016. The 366 points scored by the Golden Eagles last year were a team record in a single season. It marked the first time since the 2016 season that the Golden Eagles qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, the B.T. Washington football program has struggled with a record of 37-93. Over the past 25 seasons, B.T. Washington has not won much with a record of 73-174. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 4A and 353rd in the AHSAA. The Golden Eagles are led by head coach Lawrence ONeal who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-12 over the past two seasons at B.T. Washington. Under his direction the Golden Eagles have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach ONeal. This is likely the most talented squad in recent memory for the Golden Eagles. Look for them to be very competitive in a difficult region. A lot of records last year for the Golden Eagles as they win their first ever playoff game and hosted a playoff game for the first time in school history. But they are not ready to rest on those accomplishments at all. Coach ONeal, the son of legendary head coach Jackie ONeal at Reeltown, has brought a new mindset to Tuskegee and the winning attitude will only grow with him at the helm of this program. The Golden Eagles have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 69-47 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 4A and 23rd in the AHSAA. The Golden Eagles should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. QB Elijah Hall will be returning after completing 110 of 192 passes for 1,767 yards last season along with 22 touchdowns. Hall also rushed for another 1,839 yards and 17 TDs in 2022. Joseph Phillips will anchor the defense once again as an Edge player. The Golden Eagles open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Trinity on Friday, August 25 at Eagles Stadium. Last year the Trinity Wildcats finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in second place in Class 3A region three. The Wildcats lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Mobile Christian by a score of 27-13. B.T. Washington and Trinity have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Golden Eagles have a 0-4-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Trinity winning by a score of 34-16. The Golden Eagles return 4A All-State Senior defensive back Elijah Hall Jr.. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
