Baker completed the 2022 season with a 4-7 record. With their 4-2 region record and a second place finish in Class 7A region one, the Hornets earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Baker's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Enterprise by a score of 35-26. Baker took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2017. The Hornets last playoff victory came during the 1984 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Since 2010, Baker has gone a combined 69-66. Their 51.1% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Baker has not won much with a record of 84-171. Their 33.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 7A and 336th in the AHSAA. The Hornets are led by head coach Steve Normand who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 21-21 over the past four seasons at Baker. Under his direction the Hornets have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Normand. The Hornets have one of the toughest schedules in the state this season. Their non-region opponents finished 40-12 last year. The Hornets have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 71-44 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 7A and 9th in the AHSAA. The Hornets have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region one this season. QB Josh Flowers will be returning after completing 108 of 169 passes for 1,453 yards last season along with 10 touchdowns. He added 1,367 yards rushing and another 15 TDs. Bryce Cain will also return at the wide receiver position. He finished his junior season with 26 catches for 497 yards and 5 TDs on 19.1 yards per reception. The Hornets open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Theodore on Friday, August 25 at Hornet Field. Last year the Theodore Bobcats finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class 6A region one. The Bobcats lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 6A playoffs to Saraland by a score of 21-6. Baker and Theodore have met a total of 59 times on the football field. The Hornets have a 10-48-1 record against the Bobcats. They last met in 2022 with Theodore winning by a score of 32-3. The Hornets return 7A All-State Senior athlete Josh Flowers.
