2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Foley completed the 2022 season with a 7-4 record. Last year Foley captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 7A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-1 record. It was the first region championship for the Lions since the 2007 season. Foley's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Dothan High by a score of 42-28. The Lions won as many games as in any season since 2014. The defense allowed a team record 353 points last season. It marked the first time since the 2015 season that the Lions qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, Foley has gone a combined 69-72. Their 48.9% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Foley has managed to compile a record of 127-140. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 7A and 214th in the AHSAA. The Lions are led by head coach Deric Scott who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-16 over the past three seasons at Foley. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Scott. Over the course of his career, Coach Scott's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won four region championships. The Lions enjoyed their best season since the Todd Watson era back in 2014. Coach Scott will be looking for more improvement this season after last years region championship team. The biggest concern will be the defensive line but the offensive line will be big upfront and a strength of the team. The Lions enter the 2023 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak. The Lions should be in contention for a playoff spot in region one this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Kolton Nero will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,149 yards and 16 TDs in 2022. Receiver Perry Thompson will return after grabbing 87 passes good for 1,059 yards and 9 TDs as a junior last season. The Lions open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Prattville on Friday, August 25 at Ivan Jones Stadium. Last year the Prattville Lions finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 7A region two. The Lions closed out the regular season with a loss to Central Phenix City by a score of 27-7. Foley and Prattville have met a total of 9 times on the football field. The Lions have a 2-7-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2022 with Prattville winning by a score of 34-20. Foley lost 7A All-State defensive lineman AJ Prim to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Lions return 7A All-State Senior receiver Perry Thompson. He was named to the first team last season. The Lions also return Senior offensive lineman Logan Joellenbeck. He was named to the second team. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
