2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Central completed the 2022 season with a 6-5 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region seven, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Central's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Priceville by a score of 49-28. The defense allowed a team record 398 points last season. Central had a very good offense last year, scoring 35.0 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 36.2 points per game. Since 2010, Central has gone a combined 81-62. Their 56.6% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Central has managed to compile a record of 131-136. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 4A and 199th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Heath Wood who is entering his thirteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 71-60 over the past twelve seasons at Central. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times. They have won one region crown with Coach Wood. The Wildcats could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Unfortunately, Central finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any chance at the postseason. The Wildcats open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent East Limestone on Friday, September 1 at Joel N. Brewer Stadium. Last year the East Limestone Indians finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 5A region eight. The Indians lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Arab by a score of 54-14. Central and East Limestone have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 1-1-0 record against the Indians. They last met in 2022 with East Limestone winning by a score of 35-32. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
