2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Chickasaw completed the 2022 season with a 7-4 record. With their 3-2 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 2A region one, the Chieftains earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Chickasaw's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Ariton by a score of 61-22. No team at Chickasaw ever won more games in a season than the seven victories last year. It marked the first time since the 2019 season that the Chieftains qualified for the playoffs. The Chieftains have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023. Chickasaw is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only nine seasons. They have managed a record of 42-52 over the past nine years. Over the past 9 seasons, Chickasaw has managed to compile a record of 42-52. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 2A and 234th in the AHSAA. The Chieftains are led by head coach Carl Herring who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-4 record in his first season at Chickasaw. The Chieftains saw improvement from a 6-4 record the season before coach Herring arrived. Under his direction the Chieftains have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Herring. The Chieftains should be in contention for a playoff spot in region one this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. The Chieftains open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent LeFlore on Friday, August 25 at Prichard Stadium. Last year the LeFlore Rattlers finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in ninth place in Class 5A region one. The Rattlers closed out the regular season with a loss to Faith Academy by a score of 61-6. Chickasaw and LeFlore have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Chieftains have a 1-1-0 record against the Rattlers. They last met in 2022 with Chickasaw winning by a score of 8-0. Chickasaw lost 2A All-State athlete Kyree Shakur to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. The Chieftains return 2A All-State Junior defensive lineman JyKeem Roberson. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
