2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Corner completed the 2022 season with a 8-3 record. With their 5-2 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region five, the Yellow Jackets earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Corner's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cherokee County by a score of 47-10. The Yellow Jackets won as many games as in any season since 2006. The 393 points scored by the Yellow Jackets last year were a team record in a single season. It marked the first time since the 2019 season that the Yellow Jackets qualified for the playoffs. The Yellow Jackets hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Campbell saw improvement as they won eight games following a 2-8 record in 2021. Since 2010, Corner has gone a combined 66-71. Their 48.2% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Corner has managed to compile a record of 112-148. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 4A and 254th in the AHSAA. The Yellow Jackets will be under the direction of new head football coach Trent Campbell as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Campbell lands his first head coaching job at Corner. The Yellow Jackets should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. The Yellow Jackets open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent St. Clair County on Friday, September 1 at Corner Stadium. Last year the St. Clair County Fighting Saints finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in seventh place in Class 5A region six. The Fighting Saints closed out the regular season with a loss to Dora by a score of 34-14. Corner and St. Clair County have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 8-2-0 record against the Fighting Saints. They last met in 2022 with Corner winning by a score of 48-27. Corner lost 4A All-State defensive lineman Cade Rouse to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate running back Gavin Brown. The Yellow Jackets return 4A All-State Senior defensive back Jace Boyd. He was named to the second team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
