2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Escambia County completed the 2022 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Escambia County finished sixth in Class 4A region one with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Blue Devils have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2010 season and would love to end that streak this year. Since 2010, Escambia County has gone a combined 44-89. Their 33.1% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Escambia County has not won much with a record of 78-177. Their 31.0% winning percentage ranks 52nd in Class 4A and 350th in the AHSAA. The Blue Devils are led by head coach Vincent Harris who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-6 record in his first season at Escambia County. The Blue Devils saw improvement from a 2-8 record the season before coach Harris arrived. The Blue Devils have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Harris. The Blue Devils will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. James Whatley will be back this season at running back after rushing for 774 yards and 6 TDs in 2022. The Blue Devils open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Cottage Hill Christian on Friday, August 25 at Kingdom Stadium. Last year the Cottage Hill Christian Warriors finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 3A region one. The Warriors ended last season on a positive note with a win over St. Lukes by a score of 36-15 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Escambia County and Cottage Hill Christian have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 2-0-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2022 with Escambia County winning by a score of 21-14. Escambia County lost 4A All-State defensive back LeBron Hooks to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate offensive lineman Kaiden Arnold. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
