 2023 Preview 


       Hazel Green completed the 2022 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region eight, the Trojans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Hazel Green's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Muscle Shoals by a score of 58-7.

       It marked the first time since the 2018 season that the Trojans qualified for the playoffs. The Trojans have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023.

       Hazel Green struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 38.7 points a game.

       Since 2010, Hazel Green has gone a combined 54-79. Their 40.6% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Hazel Green has managed to compile a record of 90-165. Their 35.0% winning percentage ranks 51st in Class 6A and 318th in the AHSAA.




       The Trojans are led by head coach Charlie Wilburn who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-7 record in his first season at Hazel Green. The Trojans saw improvement from a 3-7 record the season before coach Wilburn arrived. Under his direction the Trojans have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Wilburn.

       The Trojans have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region eight this season.

       The Trojans open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Sparkman on Friday, August 25 at Sparkman Field. Last year the Sparkman Senators finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in sixth place in Class 7A region four. The Senators closed out the regular season with a loss to Muscle Shoals by a score of 31-21.

       Hazel Green and Sparkman have met a total of 62 times on the football field. The Trojans have a 23-39-0 record against the Senators. They last met in 2022 with Sparkman winning by a score of 77-9.

      

       The Trojans return 6A All-State Senior offensive lineman Shane McNatt. He was named to the second team last season.
