Holtville finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-8 record. With their 2-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region three, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Holtville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Central Clay County by a score of 50-0. The Bulldogs last playoff victory came during the 1993 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Since 2010, the Holtville football program has struggled with a record of 42-94. Over the past 25 seasons, Holtville has not won much with a record of 87-173. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 48th in Class 5A and 326th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Jason Franklin who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 30-35 over the past six seasons at Holtville. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Franklin. Over the course of his career, Coach Franklin's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times . The Bulldogs could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Junior QB Tremell Washington will be returning after completing 71 of 139 passes for 913 yards last season along with 9 touchdowns. Junior Keiland Baker will be back this season at running back after rushing for 630 yards and 9 TDs in 2022. The Bulldogs open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Fultondale on Friday, August 25 at Wildcats Field. Last year the Fultondale Wildcats finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in seventh place in Class 4A region six. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Mortimer Jordan by a score of 35-0. Holtville and Fultondale have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 2-0-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Holtville winning by a score of 58-8. Holtville lost 5A All-State linebacker Conner Hackett to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Bulldogs return 5A All-State Junior athlete Keiland Baker.
