2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Marbury completed the 2022 season with a 4-7 record. With their 2-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 5A region three, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Marbury's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Beauregard by a score of 35-10. Marbury was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.9 points a game. Since 2010, Marbury has gone a combined 47-88. Their 34.8% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marbury has managed to compile a record of 113-147. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 5A and 249th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs will be under the direction of new head football coach Houston Powell as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Powell comes over from Meek where he rebuilt a struggling program in just three seasons. His last team finished 11-1. Over the course of his career, Coach Powell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times and won one region championship. The Bulldogs have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region three this season. The Bulldogs open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Elmore County on Friday, August 25 at Marbury Stadium. Last year the Elmore County Panthers finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 5A region four. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Demopolis by a score of 48-28. Marbury and Elmore County have met a total of 16 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 5-10-1 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Elmore County winning by a score of 35-17. Marbury lost 5A All-State kicker Baylor Cannon to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
