2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Houston County finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Houston County finished seventh in Class 1A region two with a 2-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Lions last playoff victory came during the 2004 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Houston County was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Lions want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.9 points a game. Since 2010, the Houston County football program has struggled with a record of 31-101. Over the past 25 seasons, Houston County has managed to compile a record of 111-153. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 1A and 272nd in the AHSAA. The Lions are led by head coach Jake Allen who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Houston County. The Lions have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Allen. The Lions have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 50-46 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 1A and 149th in the AHSAA. The Lions will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. After just 2 wins last year, Houston County will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Lions open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Northside Methodist Academy on Thursday, August 24 at L.F. Tillery Field. Last year the Northside Methodist Academy Knights finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in eighth place in Class 3A region two. The Knights ended last season on a positive note with a win over New Brockton by a score of 48-18 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Houston County and Northside Methodist Academy have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Lions have a 1-3-0 record against the Knights. They last met in 2022 with Northside Methodist Academy winning by a score of 42-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
