 2023 Preview 


       Leeds completed the 2022 season with a 11-1 record. The Greenwave cruised through the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record going into the post season. Last year Leeds captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Greenwave since the 2015 season. Leeds lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Ramsay team by a score of 26-19.

       The Greenwave won as many games as in any season since 2015.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Leeds ranked 11th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 11.3 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Greenwave have Finished 21-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Leeds has gone a combined 115-50. Their 69.7% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Leeds has managed to compile a record of 194-113. Their 63.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 5A and 71st in the AHSAA.




       The Greenwave are led by head coach Jerry Hood who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 32-14 over the past four seasons at Leeds. Under his direction the Greenwave have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach Hood. His 135 wins rank 40th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Hood's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times and won five region championships. Coach Hood won a state championship at Clay-Chalkville in 2014.

       The Greenwave enter the 2023 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak. Leeds has won 6 consecutive region games. They have won 12 straight games on their home turf at Homer Smiles Field.

       While most teams rebuild during the off season, Leeds has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Greenwave are considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

      Kavion Henderson is considered a top notch prospect on the defensive line and will be back in 2023.

       The Greenwave open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Mortimer Jordan on Friday, August 25 at Homer Smiles Field. Last year the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 6A region five. The Blue Devils ended last season on a positive note with a win over Fultondale by a score of 35-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Leeds and Mortimer Jordan have met a total of 45 times on the football field. The Greenwave have a 36-8-1 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2022 with Leeds winning by a score of 21-7.

      

       The Greenwave return 5A All-State Senior defensive lineman Kavion Henderson. He was named to the first team last season. The Greenwave also return Senior defensive lineman Chris Burge. He was named to the honorable mention team.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

From 1947 until his retirement in 1992 Glenn Daniel's teams won 302 games at Pine Hill and Luverne. He was the winningest coach in state history until 2010.
