2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Springville finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Springville finished sixth in Class 5A region six with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 1961. The defense allowed a team record 431 points last season. The Tigers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2009 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Tigers last playoff victory came during the 2005 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Springville was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.7 points a game. Springville struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 43.1 points a game. Since 2010, the Springville football program has struggled with a record of 37-92. Over the past 25 seasons, Springville has managed to compile a record of 140-131. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 5A and 166th in the AHSAA. The Tigers are led by head coach Jon Clements who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 5-15 over the past two seasons at Springville. The Tigers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Clements. Over the course of his career, Coach Clements' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . The Tigers will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region six this season. After just a single win last year, Springville will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Etowah on Thursday, August 24 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Etowah Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in second place in Class 4A region six. The Blue Devils lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Deshler by a score of 36-33. Springville and Etowah have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 1-1-0 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2022 with Etowah winning by a score of 35-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
