2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Etowah completed the 2022 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region six, the Blue Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Etowah reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Deshler by a score of 36-33. Since 2010, Etowah has gone a combined 107-45. Their 70.4% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Etowah has finished a combined 191-94. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 4A and 54th in the AHSAA. The Blue Devils have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2009. The Blue Devils are led by head coach Matt Glover who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 8-4 record in his first season at Etowah. The Blue Devils saw improvement from a 6-5 record the season before coach Glover arrived. Under his direction the Blue Devils have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Glover. Over the course of his career, Coach Glover's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times . This could be a rebuilding year at Etowah as the Blue Devils only return seven starters from last season. Coach Glover hopes to have a few younger guys step up and make a difference in 2023. The Blue Devils should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2009 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023. The Blue Devils open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Springville on Thursday, August 24 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Springville Tigers finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class 5A region six. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Pell City by a score of 70-40. Etowah and Springville have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 1-1-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Etowah winning by a score of 35-0. Etowah lost 4A All-State quarterback Trace Thompson to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
