 2023 Preview 


       Oak Mountain finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Oak Mountain finished eighth in Class 7A region three with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       Oak Mountain was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Eagles want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.0 points a game.

       Since 2010, Oak Mountain has gone a combined 61-77. Their 44.2% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 24 seasons, Oak Mountain has managed to compile a record of 113-139. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 7A and 231st in the AHSAA.




       The Eagles will be under the direction of new head football coach Shane McComb as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach McComb was approved as the Eagles head coach Jan. 26, following seven years as the head coach at Palm Desert High School in California.

       The Eagles went all the way to California to bring in their next head football coach. Will it pay off in one of the toughest regions in the nation?

       The Eagles will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region three this season.

       The Eagles open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Northridge on Friday, August 25 at Northridge Stadium. Last year the Northridge Jaguars finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 6A region four. The Jaguars lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Pelham by a score of 44-14.

       Oak Mountain and Northridge have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 2-2-0 record against the Jaguars. They last met in 2022 with Oak Mountain winning by a score of 23-14.

       Oak Mountain lost 7A All-State  linebacker Garrett Murphy to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

       The Eagles return 7A All-State Senior receiver Sawyer Smith. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

From 1947 until his retirement in 1992 Glenn Daniel's teams won 302 games at Pine Hill and Luverne. He was the winningest coach in state history until 2010.
