2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Oakman finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-8 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region five, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Oakman's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Piedmont by a score of 61-0. Oakman took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2018. The Wildcats lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The defense allowed a team record 380 points last season. The Wildcats hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just three games which followed a 9-3 record in 2021. Oakman was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Wildcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.4 points a game. Since 2010, Oakman has gone a combined 95-56. Their 62.9% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Oakman has managed to compile a record of 146-129. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 3A and 158th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Ryan Hall who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 25-20 over the past four seasons at Oakman. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hall. The Wildcats enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. The Wildcats could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region five this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. They have managed to qualify for the playoffs every year since 2010 and hopes are high to extend that streak. The Wildcats open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Sulligent on Friday, August 25 at Hosea Collins Field. Last year the Sulligent Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 2A region five. The Blue Devils closed out the regular season with a loss to Colbert County by a score of 31-28. Oakman and Sulligent have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 2-4-0 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2022 with Sulligent winning by a score of 36-18. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
