 2023 Preview 


       Sulligent completed the 2022 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Sulligent just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 2A region five with a 3-3 region record.

       The Blue Devils had some tough luck last season as three of their five losses were by less than eight points.

       Since 2010, Sulligent has gone a combined 78-68. Their 53.4% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Sulligent has managed to compile a record of 145-137. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 2A and 183rd in the AHSAA.




       The Blue Devils will be under the direction of new head football coach Brian Gunnels as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Gunnels comes to Sulligent after being the head football coach at Brilliant between 2017-2021. Over the course of his career, Coach Gunnels' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . The Blue Devils have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 64-50 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 2A and 65th in the AHSAA.

       The Blue Devils could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region five this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Sulligent came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

      Junior AJ Lowe will be back this season at running back after rushing for 620 yards and 10 TDs in 2022.

      The defense will be led by Brooks Bozeman this season after collecting 96 total tackles last season.

       The Blue Devils open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Oakman on Friday, August 25 at Hosea Collins Field. Last year the Oakman Wildcats finished with an overall record of 3-8 and in fourth place in Class 3A region five. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Piedmont by a score of 61-0.

       Sulligent and Oakman have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 4-2-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Sulligent winning by a score of 36-18.
