 2023 Preview 


       Phillips completed the 2022 season with a 6-4 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region eight, the Bears earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Phillips's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Valley Head by a score of 61-20.

       The Bears improved in 2022 with their first winning season since 2017.

       Since 2010, Phillips has gone a combined 61-78. Their 43.9% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Phillips has managed to compile a record of 107-158. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 1A and 289th in the AHSAA.




       The Bears are led by head coach Adam Lawler who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-26 over the past four seasons at Phillips. Under his direction the Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Lawler.

       The Bears have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region eight this season.

       The Bears open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Tharptown on Friday, September 1 at Tharptown Stadium. Last year the Tharptown Wildcats finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 2A region eight. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Whitesburg Christian by a score of 49-7.

       Phillips and Tharptown have met a total of 16 times on the football field. The Bears have a 11-5-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Phillips winning by a score of 37-22.

       Phillips lost 1A All-State  quarterback Nevin Elkins to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
