2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Tharptown finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Tharptown finished seventh in Class 2A region eight with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Wildcats have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Wildcats have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2023. Tharptown was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Wildcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.5 points a game. Tharptown struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 46.2 points a game. Since 2010, the Tharptown football program has struggled with a record of 29-99. Over the past 17 seasons, Tharptown has not won much with a record of 40-124. Their 24.0% winning percentage ranks 58th in Class 2A and 376th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. The Wildcats will be under the direction of new head football coach John Johnson. as they enter the 2023 season. This season, the Wildcats will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region eight. The Wildcats open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Shoals Christian on Friday, August 25 at Flame Field. Last year the Shoals Christian Flame finished with an overall record of 2-7 and in sixth place in Class 1A region eight.
