Pickens County completed the 2022 season with a 11-4 record. With their 7-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region five, the Tornados earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. The Tornados won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 1A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Leroy at the Alabama Super Seven 42-20 in Auburn. Over the past two seasons the Tornados have Finished 22-7 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Pickens County has gone a combined 135-44. Their 75.4% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Pickens County has finished a combined 225-94. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 1A and 39th in the AHSAA. The Tornados have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2004. The Tornados are led by head coach Michael Williams who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 53-19 over the past five seasons at Pickens County. Under his direction the Tornados have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Williams. Pickens County is still Pickens County. It seems every year they just get better as the season progresses and are great by the time November rolls around. This year will likely be no different. The Tornados are considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Tornados are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Tornados have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2004 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. Receiver Santonio Jones will return after catching 42 passes good for 803 yards and 10 TDs as a junior last season. The defense will be led by Korbit Sommerville this season after collecting 95 total tackles last season. Kemaurion Plott caught 38 passes for 786 yards and 9 touchdowns and will be back for the 2023 football season. The Tornados open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Aliceville on Friday, August 25 at G.S. Spruill Stadium. Last year the Aliceville Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 11-2 and in first place in Class 2A region five. The Yellow Jackets lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 2A playoffs to Pisgah by a score of 26-22. Pickens County and Aliceville have met a total of 86 times on the football field. The Tornados have a 42-43-1 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in 2022 with Aliceville winning by a score of 55-12. Pickens County lost 1A All-State offensive lineman Davian Jones to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive lineman Jamarian Cohen and athlete Christian Byrd. The Tornados return 1A All-State Senior linebacker Korbit Sommerville. He was named to the first team last season. The Tornados also return Senior linebacker Devin Cohen.
