2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
St. John Paul II completed the 2022 season with a 4-6 record. Last year St. John Paul II just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region eight with a 2-5 region record. St. John Paul II was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Falcons want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.8 points a game. The Falcons would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. St. John Paul II is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only eleven seasons. They have managed a record of 28-83 over the past eleven years. Over the past 11 seasons, St. John Paul II has not won much with a record of 28-83. Their 25.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 4A and 370th in the AHSAA. The Falcons have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. The Falcons will be under the direction of new head football coach Chad OMelia as they enter the 2023 season. Coach OMelia spent four years as an assistant at Birmingham Southern. He is the Falcons fifth head coach since 2017. The Falcons will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region eight this season. Austin Porter will be back this season at running back after rushing for 680 yards and 5 TDs in 2022. The Falcons open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Westbrook Christian on Friday, August 25 at Jack Osborn Stadium. Last year the Westbrook Christian Warriors finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in seventh place in Class 3A region six. The Warriors ended last season on a positive note with a win over White Plains by a score of 47-27 after failing to gain a playoff spot. St. John Paul II and Westbrook Christian have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Falcons have a 0-2-0 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2022 with Westbrook Christian winning by a score of 38-3. St. John Paul II lost 4A All-State kicker Steven Taylor to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
