 2023 Preview 


       Sumiton Christian completed the 2022 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Sumiton Christian just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region five with a 4-4 region record.

       Since 2010, Sumiton Christian has gone a combined 56-77. Their 42.1% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Sumiton Christian has managed to compile a record of 127-138. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 1A and 210th in the AHSAA.




       The Eagles are led by head coach David Powell who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 19-23 over the past four seasons at Sumiton Christian. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Powell. His 239 wins rank 12th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Powell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-six times and won eleven region championships.

       The Eagles have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region five this season. Sumiton Christian came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

      The defense will be led by Noah Godwin this season after collecting 85 total tackles last season.

       The Eagles open the 2023 season at home against region opponent Hubbertville on Friday, September 1 at David Campbell Field. Last year the Hubbertville Lions finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 1A region five. The Lions closed out the regular season with a loss to Lynn by a score of 44-14.

       Sumiton Christian and Hubbertville have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 1-2-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2022 with Sumiton Christian winning by a score of 14-8.
