The Rebels have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. The Rebels are led by head coach Robert Evans who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-5 record in his first season at Vestavia Hills. The Rebels saw improvement from a 4-6 record the season before coach Evans arrived. Under his direction the Rebels have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Evans. What a great job by Head Coach Robert Evans in 2022. A tough schedule awaits them this fall. The Rebels have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 7A. Their opponents had a combined record of 71-46 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 7A and 15th in the AHSAA. The Rebels have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region three this season. QB John Paul Head accounted for 1,984 passing yards and 38 total touchdowns last season, along with rushing for 1,104 yards. Edge rusher Jordan Ross will be returning. He is considered by many as the states top prospect. The Rebels open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Mountain Brook on Thursday, August 24 at Spartan Stadium. Last year the Mountain Brook Spartans finished with an overall record of 12-3 and in second place in Class 6A region five. The Spartans lost in the Class 6A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Saraland. They final score was 38-17 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook have met a total of 58 times on the football field. The Rebels have a 30-28-0 record against the Spartans. They last met in 2022 with Mountain Brook winning by a score of 24-14. Vestavia Hills lost 7A All-State defensive back Grant Downey to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Rebels return 7A All-State Senior athlete John Paul Head. He was named to the first team last season.
