 2023 Preview 


       West Blocton completed the 2022 season with a 6-5 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 4A region three, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. West Blocton's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Handley by a score of 46-6.

       West Blocton was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.5 points a game.

       Since 2010, West Blocton has gone a combined 70-72. Their 49.3% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, West Blocton has managed to compile a record of 117-148. Their 44.0% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 4A and 242nd in the AHSAA.




       The Tigers are led by head coach DreMail King who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-5 record in his first season at West Blocton. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach King. Over the course of his career, Coach King's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

       The Tigers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2013 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023.

      Nate Barron will be back this season at running back after rushing for 879 yards and 6 TDs in 2022.

      Receiver Tyseon Smith will return after catching 25 passes good for 497 yards and 9 TDs as a sophomore last season.

      The defense will be led by Carson Deerman this season after collecting 129 total tackles last season.

       The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Shelby County on Friday, August 25 at Tiger Field. Last year the Shelby County Wildcats finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class 5A region three. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Woodlawn by a score of 31-7.

       West Blocton and Shelby County have met a total of 21 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 14-6-1 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Shelby County winning by a score of 14-7.
