West End completed the 2022 season with a 7-4 record. With their 3-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 2A region six, the Patriots earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. West End's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Aliceville by a score of 62-13. The Patriots improved in 2022 with their first winning season since 2016. The Patriots won as many games as in any season since 2007. It marked the first time since the 2016 season that the Patriots qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, the West End football program has struggled with a record of 45-89. Over the past 25 seasons, West End has managed to compile a record of 111-152. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 39th in Class 2A and 264th in the AHSAA. The Patriots are led by head coach Derrick Sewell who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 11-10 over the past two seasons at West End. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Sewell. Over the course of his career, Coach Sewell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . The seven victories for the Patriots last season were the most since the 2007 football season. Coach Sewell will be looking to continue the success of 2022 this season. With only about 30 players out his year, West End returns six starters on each side of the ball but will be replacing their starting quarterback when the season starts. The Patriots have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region six this season. The Patriots open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Gaylesville on Friday, August 25 at Patriot Stadium. Last year the Gaylesville Trojans finished with an overall record of 3-6 and in fifth place in Class 1A region seven. The Trojans ended last season on a positive note with a win over Talladega County Central by a score of 54-14 after failing to gain a playoff spot. West End and Gaylesville have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 5-0-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2022 with West End winning by a score of 63-26.
