2023 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gaylesville finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-6 record. Last year Gaylesville just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region seven with a 2-4 region record. The Trojans last playoff victory came during the 1975 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Since 2010, Gaylesville has gone a combined 43-87. Their 33.1% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Gaylesville has not won much with a record of 81-172. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 1A and 345th in the AHSAA. The Trojans are led by head coach Brian Knapp who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-24 over the past four seasons at Gaylesville. Under his direction the Trojans have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Knapp. Over the course of his career, Coach Knapp's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . Gaylesville finished the season on a high note winning three of their last four games. An early season overtime loss on the road at Cedar Bluff haunted the Trojans and kept them out of the postseason. Keeping players healthy the first four games will be a priority for the Trojans if they expect to make the playoffs. Gaylesville will be working to fill the gaps left by graduation from all-state honorees Keylon Higgins and Briley Mitchell. Gaylesville opens with non-region squads 2A West End and 2A Collinsville followed by region contests at home against Coosa Christian and Cedar Bluff. Current head coach Brian Knapp is following in the footsteps of his grandfather Roy Knapp, Sr. The football field at Gaylesville is named in honor of the elder Knapp who led the Trojans from 1956-1960 accumulating a won-loss-tied record of 15-21-2. The Trojans will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region seven this season. The Trojans open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent West End Walnut Grove on Friday, August 25 at Patriot Stadium. Last year the West End Walnut Grove Patriots finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 2A region six. The Patriots lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Aliceville by a score of 62-13. Gaylesville and West End Walnut Grove have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Trojans have a 0-5-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2022 with West End Walnut Grove winning by a score of 63-26. Gaylesville lost 1A All-State athlete Keylon Higgins to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate defensive lineman Briley Mitchell. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
