2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Collinsville completed the 2022 season with a 8-3 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 2A region seven, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Collinsville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Falkville by a score of 42-7. It marked the first time since the 2019 season that the Panthers qualified for the playoffs. The Panthers hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Willingham saw improvement as they won eight games following a 3-7 record in 2021. Since 2010, Collinsville has gone a combined 94-51. Their 64.8% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Collinsville has managed to compile a record of 150-121. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 2A and 138th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Ernie Willingham who is entering his fifteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 91-64 over the past fourteen seasons at Collinsville. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Willingham. His 142 wins rank 36th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Willingham's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seventeen times and won four region championships. Coach Willingham needs eight wins this season to reach the 150 win milestone. Collinsville will be returning many of the key players with a few positions needing to be replaced for the Panthers to be more than just a little competitive this season. The Panthers lost two interior linemen to graduation so the depth along the line of scrimmage will be improved over last season. The Panthers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region seven this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. The Panthers have a a great freshman QB-WR duo in Mason McAteer and Gavin Lang. Mason McAteer passed for 1,462 yards and 20 TDs last year. He also had 644 yards rushing and another 7 TDs. The Panthers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Gaylesville on Friday, September 1 at Roy Knapp Sr Field. Last year the Gaylesville Trojans finished with an overall record of 3-6 and in fifth place in Class 1A region seven. The Trojans ended last season on a positive note with a win over Talladega County Central by a score of 54-14 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Collinsville and Gaylesville have met a total of 46 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 37-9-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2013 with Collinsville winning by a score of 43-28. Collinsville lost 2A All-State running back Keaton DeBoard to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
