2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Section finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Section finished seventh in Class 2A region seven with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Lions lost as many games as in any season since 2016. The Lions hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 6-4 record in 2021. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Section averaged scoring just 13.6 points a game. The Lions also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 36.2 points a game. Since 2010, Section has gone a combined 46-85. Their 35.1% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Section has managed to compile a record of 110-149. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 2A and 261st in the AHSAA. The Lions will be under the direction of new head football coach Riley Edwards as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Edwards was the head coach at Crossville last season and has been in coaching for two decades with stops at Crossville and Collinsville. Coach overall record as a head football coach in Alabama for one stands at 0-10 (%). Coach Edwards came over to Section in the spring and has 31 players out for fall practice. Edwards says they are staring from scratch and building for the future. Josh Varner is expected to start at QB for the Lions when they open the season. The Lions have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 68-45 last season. That ranks 3rd in Class 2A and 18th in the AHSAA. This season, the Lions will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region seven. The Lions open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Decatur Heritage Christian on Friday, August 25 at Rebels Stadium, West Morgan. Last year the Decatur Heritage Christian Eagles finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 1A region seven. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a loss to Colbert Heights by a score of 20-13. Section and Decatur Heritage Christian have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Lions have a 0-2-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2022 with Decatur Heritage Christian winning by a score of 24-22. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
