2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Calera completed the 2022 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region three, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Calera's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Hillcrest Tuscaloosa by a score of 38-0. Since 2010, Calera has gone a combined 76-67. Their 53.1% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Calera has managed to compile a record of 154-122. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 6A and 128th in the AHSAA. The Eagles will be under the direction of new head football coach Jerad Holder as they enter the 2023 season. The Eagles return just four players to the offense and two on defense. Interim head coach Holder will be looking at a lot of young players to step into these positions as the season starts. Calera does have twenty-two seniors on this years squad. The Eagles could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. The Eagles open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Spain Park on Friday, August 25 at Ricky M. Cairns Memorial Stadium. Last year the Spain Park Jaguars finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 7A region three. The Jaguars ended last season on a positive note with a win over Pelham by a score of 35-14 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Calera and Spain Park have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 0-3-0 record against the Jaguars. They last met in 2022 with Spain Park winning by a score of 14-10. Calera lost 6A All-State receiver Braylyn Farrington to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate linebacker Michael Banks-Mason. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
