2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Chelsea finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Chelsea finished seventh in Class 7A region three with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Hornets lost as many games as in any season since 2001. Chelsea was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Hornets want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.0 points a game. Since 2010, Chelsea has gone a combined 62-74. Their 45.6% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 7A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Chelsea has managed to compile a record of 126-142. Their 47.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 7A and 219th in the AHSAA. The Hornets are led by head coach Todd Cassity who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Chelsea. The Hornets have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Cassity. Over the course of his career, Coach Cassity's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times . The Hornets struggled in region three last year winning just one game. But most teams would find the going tough in that region. The Hornets enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 6 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Hornets will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region three. The Hornets open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Helena on Thursday, August 24 at Husky Stadium. Last year the Helena Huskies finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 6A region three. The Huskies closed out the regular season with a loss to Vestavia Hills by a score of 44-24. Chelsea and Helena have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Hornets have a 5-6-0 record against the Huskies. They last met in 2022 with Helena winning by a score of 28-6. Chelsea lost 7A All-State punter Jack Seymour to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. The Hornets return 7A All-State Senior running back Emerson Russell. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
