2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cherokee finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Cherokee finished seventh in Class 1A region eight with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Cherokee averaged scoring just 13.2 points a game. The Indians also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 49.6 points a game. The Indians would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, Cherokee has gone a combined 37-97. Their 27.6% winning percentage ranks 51st in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Cherokee has not won much with a record of 86-172. Their 33.0% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 1A and 338th in the AHSAA. The Indians are led by head coach Ben Floyd who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 2-28 over the past three seasons at Cherokee. The Indians have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Floyd. The Indians will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region eight this season. After just a single win last year, Cherokee will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. The Indians open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Brindlee Mountain on Friday, August 25 at Lions Den. Last year the Brindlee Mountain Lions finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 3A region seven. The Lions closed out the regular season with a loss to Gaston by a score of 50-6. Cherokee and Brindlee Mountain have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Indians have a 1-1-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2022 with Brindlee Mountain winning by a score of 26-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
