2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Fairfield finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-8 record. With their 3-4 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region five, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Fairfield's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Leeds by a score of 34-13. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2002. Fairfield was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.8 points a game. Since 2010, Fairfield has gone a combined 70-68. Their 50.7% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Fairfield has managed to compile a record of 139-132. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 5A and 181st in the AHSAA. The Tigers are led by head coach Shepherd Skanes who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-8 record in his first season at Fairfield. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Skanes. Over the course of his career, Coach Skanes' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . The Tigers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region five this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. QB Eric Handley will return in 2023 to lead the offense. The Tigers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Parker on Friday, August 25 at Major Brown Memorial Stadium. Last year the Parker Thundering Herd finished with an overall record of 7-5 and in fourth place in Class 6A region five. The Thundering Herd lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Muscle Shoals by a score of 31-6. Fairfield and Parker have met a total of 20 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 11-9-0 record against the Thundering Herd. They last met in 2022 with Parker winning by a score of 35-12. Fairfield lost 5A All-State athlete Jeremiah Hudson-Davis to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
