2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Holt finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Holt finished eighth in Class 4A region three with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Ironmen lost as many games as in any season since 2016. The Ironmen have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2004 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Ironmen last playoff victory came during the 1998 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Holt averaged scoring just 4.2 points a game. The Ironmen also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 40.0 points a game. The Ironmen would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the Holt football program has struggled with a record of 19-110. Over the past 25 seasons, Holt has not won much with a record of 61-193. Their 24.0% winning percentage ranks 58th in Class 4A and 374th in the AHSAA. The Ironmen have struggled on the football field with only one winning season during this time. Their last winning season was 1998. The Ironmen will be under the direction of new head football coach Brian Newton as they enter the 2023 season. This past season, Newton worked as an assistant coach under Tuscaloosa County Coach Adam Winegarden. He also spent time coaching under Chris Smelley at American Christian Academy in Tuscaloosa. The Ironmen enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 15 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Ironmen will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region three. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Holt will be to simply win some games. The Ironmen open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Brookwood on Friday, August 25 at Woody Clements Field. Last year the Brookwood Panthers finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 6A region four. The Panthers closed out the regular season with a loss to Tuscaloosa County by a score of 20-14. Holt and Brookwood have met a total of 83 times on the football field. The Ironmen have a 58-25-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Brookwood winning by a score of 59-2. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
