Homewood completed the 2022 season with a 10-3 record. Last year Homewood captured the region three title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Homewood lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Saraland team by a score of 57-56. Since 2010, Homewood has gone a combined 99-52. Their 65.6% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Homewood has finished a combined 215-91. Their 70.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 6A and 40th in the AHSAA. The Patriots have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. The Patriots are led by head coach Ben Berguson who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 70-38 over the past nine seasons at Homewood. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Berguson. Over the course of his career, Coach Berguson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times and won three region championships. The Patriots will start the 2023 football season with 15 seniors. They return on two starters to the offense and three on defense. So rebuilding last years team will be key for Coach Berguson if they wish to be successful this year. Will Myers will be the starting quarterback and is considered a very good runner. The Patriots enter the 2023 season having won 6 straight region games. The Patriots are considered one of the favorites for the region three championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Patriots have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2011 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. Junior LB Talton Thomas will be returning to anchor the defense in 2023. The Patriots open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent John Carroll on Friday, August 25 at John Carroll Field. Last year the John Carroll Cavaliers finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 5A region five. The Cavaliers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Maplesville by a score of 28-12 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Homewood and John Carroll have met a total of 36 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 27-7-2 record against the Cavaliers. They last met in 2022 with Homewood winning by a score of 38-20.
