Jacksonville completed the 2022 season with a 8-4 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 4A region four, the Golden Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Jacksonville reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Catholic Montgomery by a score of 44-27. Since 2010, Jacksonville has gone a combined 93-55. Their 62.8% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Jacksonville has managed to compile a record of 143-125. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 4A and 157th in the AHSAA. The Golden Eagles are led by head coach Clint Smith who is entering his twelveth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 89-39 over the past eleven seasons at Jacksonville. Under his direction the Golden Eagles have qualified for the playoffs a total of ten times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Smith. His 146 wins rank 34th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fifteen times and won three region championships. Coach Smith won a state championship at Trinity Oxford in 2000. Coach Smith needs four wins this season to reach the 150 win milestone. The Golden Eagles will be playing football on turf this season for the first time in their home stadium. Jacksonville will more experienced at the skilled positions but will need to replace most of the offensive line to be successful in 2023. The Golden Eagles should be in contention for a playoff spot in region four this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2012 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023. Senior QB Jim Ogle returns to lead the offense. Last season, Ogle earned Class 4A All-State honors after throwing for 2,523 yards and 28 touchdowns along with rushing for 252 yards and two TDs. The Golden Eagles open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Boaz on Friday, August 25 at L.F. Corley Field. Last year the Boaz Pirates finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 5A region seven. The Pirates lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Russellville by a score of 63-10. Jacksonville and Boaz have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Golden Eagles have a 2-2-0 record against the Pirates. They last met in 2022 with Jacksonville winning by a score of 27-7. Jacksonville lost 4A All-State offensive lineman Nick Smith to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate defensive lineman Dee Prothro. The Golden Eagles return 4A All-State Senior receiver Kydric Fisher. He was named to the first team last season. The Golden Eagles also return sophomore defensive back Will Phillips. He was named to the second team. The Golden Eagles also return Senior quarterback Jim Ogle.
