2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Marion County completed the 2022 season with a 9-4 record. With their 6-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region five, the Red Raiders earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Marion County lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Pickens County team by a score of 40-14. The Red Raiders won as many games as in any season since 2012. Since 2010, Marion County has gone a combined 88-63. Their 58.3% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marion County has managed to compile a record of 151-124. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 1A and 134th in the AHSAA. The Red Raiders are led by head coach Kyle Williams who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 37-38 over the past seven seasons at Marion County. Under his direction the Red Raiders have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Williams. With improvements in each of the last three seasons at Marion County the Red Raiders could be even better this fall. They will need to replace some key starters on defense but the offense should be in good hands with Joe Aldridge at QB. The Red Raiders should be in contention for a playoff spot in region five this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. QB Joe Aldridge will be returning after completing 89 of 144 passes for 1,623 yards last season along with 24 touchdowns. Aldridge also rushed for another 647 yards and scored 11 TDs. Receiver Tye Madison will return after catching 31 passes good for 724 yards and 10 TDs as a sophomore last season. The defense will be led by Riley Smith this season after collecting 86 total tackles last season. The Red Raiders open the 2023 season on the road against region opponent Lynn on Friday, September 8 at Posey Field. Last year the Lynn Bears finished with an overall record of 11-2 and in first place in Class 1A region five. The Bears lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 1A playoffs to Coosa Christian by a score of 46-29. Marion County and Lynn have met a total of 34 times on the football field. The Red Raiders have a 18-16-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2022 with Lynn winning by a score of 31-14. Marion County lost 1A All-State defensive back Zach Lamoureux to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive back Landon Morrow and linebacker Brooks Junkin. The Red Raiders return 1A All-State Senior athlete Joe Aldridge. He was named to the second team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
