McGill-Toolen completed the 2022 season with a 5-5 record. Last year McGill-Toolen just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 6A region one with a 4-4 region record. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, McGill-Toolen has gone a combined 123-35. Their 77.8% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, McGill-Toolen has finished a combined 211-88. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class 6A and 32nd in the AHSAA. The Yellow Jackets have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. The Yellow Jackets will be under the direction of new head football coach David Faulkner as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Faulkner is a former head coach at Fairhope and Enterprise. Faulkner has been on Neal Browns off-the-field staff at West Virginia Over the course of his career, Coach Faulkner's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won one region championship. The Yellow Jackets could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. McGill-Toolen came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year. QB Andrew Murchison will be returning after completing 107 of 191 passes for 1,506 yards last season along with 16 touchdowns. Receiver Rosco Haywood will return after grabbing 47 passes good for 570 yards and 3 TDs as a junior last season. CB Shemar Welch will be returning to anchor the defense in 2023. The Yellow Jackets open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Catholic Montgomery on Friday, August 25 at Lipscomb Park. Last year the Catholic Montgomery Knights finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class 4A region two. The Knights lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 4A playoffs to Andalusia by a score of 29-26. McGill-Toolen and Catholic Montgomery have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 0-2-0 record against the Knights. They last met in 2022 with Catholic Montgomery winning by a score of 42-21. McGill-Toolen lost 6A All-State receiver Anthony Eager to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate defensive lineman Dylan Sauce.
