 2023 Preview 


       Murphy finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 2-7 record. Last year Murphy finished seventh in Class 6A region one with a 2-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       Murphy was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.3 points a game.

       The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-15 record. Since 2010, Murphy has gone a combined 67-70. Their 48.9% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Murphy has managed to compile a record of 151-121. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 6A and 129th in the AHSAA.




       The Panthers will be under the direction of new head football coach Justin Hannah as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Hannah gets his first head coaching opportunity. Hannah spent the 2022 season as defensive coordinator at Jackson-Olin. He also has coached at Shades Valley and at his alma mater, Tuskegee.

       The Panthers have seen six coaching changes wince 2013 and are hoping Coach Hannah can bring back some stability and winning to Murphy.

       The Panthers will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region one this season. After just 2 wins last year, Murphy will be hoping to become more competitive in the region.

      Receiver Jaylon Edney will return after grabbing 29 passes good for 671 yards and 6 TDs as a junior last season.

       The Panthers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Daphne on Thursday, August 24 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Last year the Daphne Trojans finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 7A region one. The Trojans ended last season on a positive note with a win over Hillcrest Evergreen by a score of 34-14 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Murphy and Daphne have met a total of 13 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 6-7-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2021 with Daphne winning by a score of 34-15.
