2023 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Notasulga finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-8 record. Last year Notasulga finished seventh in Class 1A region four with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Notasulga took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2018. The Blue Devils lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The Blue Devils hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 10-2 record in 2021. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Notasulga averaged scoring just 10.7 points a game. Since 2010, Notasulga has gone a combined 82-63. Their 56.6% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Notasulga has managed to compile a record of 148-129. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 1A and 159th in the AHSAA. The Blue Devils are led by head coach Anthony Jones who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 50-38 over the past eight seasons at Notasulga. Under his direction the Blue Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won one region crown with Coach Jones. The Blue Devils will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just a single win last year, Notasulga will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. Notasulga simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 64 students, the Blue Devils are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. The Blue Devils open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Lanett on Friday, August 25 at Blue Devils Stadium. Last year the Lanett Panthers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 2A region three. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to B.B. Comer by a score of 45-20. Notasulga and Lanett have met a total of 13 times on the football field. The Blue Devils have a 0-13-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2022 with Lanett winning by a score of 27-0. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
