2023 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shoals Christian finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 2-7 record. Last year Shoals Christian finished sixth in Class 1A region eight with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Shoals Christian was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Flame want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.8 points a game. Shoals Christian struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 38.4 points a game. Since 2010, Shoals Christian has gone a combined 45-91. Their 33.1% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Shoals Christian has managed to compile a record of 98-148. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 1A and 281st in the AHSAA. The Flame will be under the direction of new head football coach Brett Vick as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Vick comes to Shoals Christian after serving as the defensive coordinator last season at Mars Hill. The Flame will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region eight this season. After just 2 wins last year, Shoals Christian will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Flame open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Tharptown on Friday, August 25 at Flame Field. Last year the Tharptown Wildcats finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 2A region eight. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Whitesburg Christian by a score of 49-7. Shoals Christian and Tharptown have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Flame have a 9-6-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Tharptown winning by a score of 28-14. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
