2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Talladega finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Talladega finished seventh in Class 4A region four with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The defense allowed a team record 586 points last season. Talladega was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.1 points a game. Talladega struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 58.6 points a game. The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. Since 2010, Talladega has gone a combined 37-95. Their 28.0% winning percentage ranks 53rd in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Talladega has not won much with a record of 56-196. Their 22.0% winning percentage ranks 60th in Class 4A and 383rd in the AHSAA. The Tigers have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. The Tigers are led by head coach William F. Smith who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at Talladega. The Tigers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won one region championship. The Tigers enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 11 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Talladega will be to simply win some games. The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Lincoln on Friday, August 25 at Mary Dumas Stadium. Last year the Lincoln Golden Bears finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 5A region six. The Golden Bears closed out the regular season with a loss to Beauregard by a score of 28-17. Talladega and Lincoln have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 10-9-0 record against the Golden Bears. They last met in 2022 with Lincoln winning by a score of 54-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
