 2023 Preview 


       Vigor completed the 2022 season with a 5-4 record. Last year Vigor just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 5A region one with a 4-4 region record.

       The Wolves hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just five games which followed a 14-1 record in 2021.

       The defense was very stingy last season as Vigor ranked 15th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 12.2 points a game.

       Vigor was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Wolves want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.8 points a game.

       Since 2010, Vigor has gone a combined 100-56. Their 64.1% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Vigor has finished a combined 201-100. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 5A and 58th in the AHSAA. The Wolves have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.




       The Wolves are led by head coach Markus Cook who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-4 record in his first season at Vigor. The Wolves have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Cook.

       The Wolves hope to return to the playoffs after a year on the sidelines. Vigor will return 17 starters, 10 on offense and seven on defense. Junior QB Kevin Brisker will lead the improved offense in 2023. On offense they will be looking to junior OL Micah Debose, junior OL Ty Tucker, senior RB Jacori Barnes, senior ATH Jerrian Graham, sophomore WR Gerritt Holcombe and junior ATH Kevin Malone.

       The defense will be led by a pair of seniors in LB/DB Brandon Purifoy and DL Jake Lang. Jerrian Graham finished as the 5A 100m champion (10.6) and Kevin Malone was 2nd (10.8) also Vigor won the 5A 4x100m relay. They should be very good on defense as always but will need to get better on offense to qualify for a playoff spot in a very tough region.

       The Wolves could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Vigor came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

      

      Micah Debose will be back this fall to lead the Wolves along the offensive line. He is considered one of the top prospects in the class of 2025.

       The Wolves open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Blount on Saturday, August 26 at Prichard Stadium. Last year the Blount Leopards finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 6A region one. The Leopards ended last season on a positive note with a win over Murphy by a score of 28-22 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Vigor and Blount have met a total of 52 times on the football field. The Wolves have a 38-14-0 record against the Leopards. They last met in 2022 with Vigor winning by a score of 7-0.

       Vigor lost 5A All-State  defensive lineman Michael Towner Jr. to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive lineman Arenza Davis Jr. and defensive back Jermaine Holcombe Jr..

       The Wolves return 5A All-State Junior offensive lineman Micah DeBose. He was named to the first team last season. The Wolves also return Senior linebacker Brandon Purifoy. He was named to the first team.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
